WALLPAPER: HOW TO MEASURE

Measure your wall in centimetres.  Measure the width from left to right, at both the top and bottom (as most walls are not perfectly square). Then measure the height from the ceiling to floor, on both the left and right.

If there is a door or window in the wall you wish to wallpaper, simply pretend that it is not there and measure the whole wall, including the door or window. This ensures that the pattern remains seamless around all the door or windows. On installation, you can simply trim around it using relief cuts. You can use the left-over wallpaper for something fun (e.g. at the back of a wardrobe or shelving).

It is important that you accurately measure your wall, as your wallpaper is made to the measurements that you provide us (plus small bleeds to allow for wall warping). We are unable to change your wallpaper once it has been made, so please CHECK and DOUBLE CHECK before ordering.

If you have measured incorrectly, and you require extra wallpaper, please contact us to discuss. Please note that you will be charged for extra wallpaper pieces.

When entering your measurements at check out, always allow a little extra, it is better to have excess, which you can trim later.

Do you require wallpaper for more than one wall? Please get in touch with us to discuss how to run your wallpaper around the walls/ around corners. We will happily advise you on how best to order and install, and arrange a specialised quote for you.

WALLPAPER: PANELS/ DROPS

Our wallpaper is custom made/ made to order. Please enter your measurements (height x width) at checkout, and we will prepare your wallpaper to size. Your wallpaper will be delivered in drops or panels; the maximum width of 1 drop is 120cm.  Commonly, our customers require 3 drops.  We will endeavour to provide you with equal drops. We prefer larger drops to avoid multiple joins, unlike wallpaper rolls which are often a much smaller width.  We routinely provide a 1cm overlap on each panel as well as a 5cm overhang on the base and end panel to allow for any inaccuracies in wall shape, and human error in measuring, and to ensure a perfect seamless finish. The excess can be trimmed post application with a sharp Stanley knife.  Our wallpaper can be applied around windows and other obstacles e.g. a bulk head using relief cuts.

WALLPAPER: INSTALLATION

Also see our Instagram highlights: “installs”, "mural" and "Penelope's room"  for helpful videos and installation tips.

You will need two people to hang our wallpaper.

Equipment needed:

  • A step ladder
  • A squeegee (provided with your wallpaper)
  • A metal ruler
  • A sharp Stanley knife

1/ Check the wall for any defects (e.g. pictures hooks, remove and fill any holes). Also remove any switch plates/power point/light switch covers.

2/ Give the wall a wipe over with a wet cloth or sugar soap for older walls.  Allow to dry completely.  The wall must be smooth and clean before application.  Bubbles may occur if you have not cleaned your walls adequately before application.

3/ Start from the left-hand side of the wall, with the wallpaper panel numbered (1) (see reverse of wallpaper). Work sequentially through the numbered panels.  Ensure you have the wallpaper the correct way up (see reverse marked ‘TOP’).  You must take your time, as panel 1 needs to be correctly positioned; it sets the tone for your entire wall.

4/ When you are ready to stick the wallpaper on, lay the wallpaper flat on the floor and peel back the backing sheet around 10cm and crease/ fold back so that the peel sits flat (do not peel the entire backing sheet off yet).

5/ Start sticking the 10cm of exposed wallpaper and ensure that it’s level across your top cornice (if you have cornice) or ceiling. NOTE: Sometimes your ceiling may not be perfectly square, so you may need to overhang the wallpaper above the cornice and trim later.  Your adjoining wall, also may not be perfectly square, therefore, you may need to overhang the wallpaper slightly over the left-hand edge and trim later.  Smooth it onto the wall firmly with the squeegee provided.

6/ Now it’s time to the remove the backing sheet.  Remember:  make sure that it’s in exactly the right position before continuing. Don’t stick until you are comfortable that you have it in the right position.  Now is the time to adjust the wallpaper if you are not happy with your positioning.  Very slowly and evenly peel back the backing sheet. Continue as you go, to smooth on firmly with your squeegee. Your assistant can slowly remove the backing sheet during this phase while you smooth it on firmly. Work your way down and outwards to remove any bubbles. Let this happen naturally, do not try to stretch or force it into place. Bubbles can occur if you have not pushed it down firmly.

7/ You should not have too many wrinkles or bubbles if you’ve followed the above instructions, but sometimes it happens and if it does, don’t worry, just rub them out gently with your squeegee.

8/ Apply all additional panels as per panel 1.   All additional panels have a 1cm overlap, simply align the image at the top while your assistant aligns the image at the bottom.  Remember to match the pattern/image perfectly on both panels before you stick.

9/ Only when all panels have been adhered, use a sharp Stanley knife to remove any excess wallpaper and cut around any switch plates or obstacles. You should have overhang at base and on the end/final panel that you need to trim (and sometimes you may have overhang above the cornice and along the left-hand edge that you also need to trim).

Our wallpaper is re-positionable, so if you feel you have made a mistake, you can simply peel it off slowly and gently and realign it.  Do not trim/ cut the wallpaper until you have installed the whole wall and are happy with the finished product.

Our wallpaper is both removable and reusable, however, the adhesive may weaken if exposed to dirt and dust.  We would suggest keeping the backing sheets, if you are moving to a new house/ repositioning; stick the wallpaper back on to the backing sheet and roll carefully for easy transport.  Please note – our wallpaper is made to measure, if you move the wallpaper to a new location, it may not fit the new wall dimensions, as wall width and height vary.

WALLPAPER: REMOVAL

To remove the wallpaper, simply pull slowly and carefully at a 180-degree angle. Do not rip off forcefully and quickly.

We cannot guarantee a damage-free removal in all cases (e.g. sometimes paint can peel away from filler joins), as there is such a huge variety in wall preparation and paint quality.  The better the walls have been prepared and painted, the less likely damage will occur when you remove your wallpaper.

    DECALS: INSTALLATION

Application is simple. Our decals are easily applied by a novice installer.

As a first step, you can leave the backing paper on, and place the decals on the wall with blu tack to ensure perfect placement.  However, this is not absolutely necessary as they are re-positionable.

Peel and stick… simply peel the backing sheet down around 10cm, being careful not to touch the adhesive. Stick it down, then remove the backing sheet while applying the decal to the wall/ surface.  Smooth your clean hand over the decal to push it flat to the wall.

Note: We would suggest keeping the backing sheets, in the event you are moving house/ repositioning; stick them back on to the backing sheet for easy transport.

    DECALS: REMOVAL

To remove, use your finger nail or blade of a knife to lift the edge of the decal, then peel back slowly.

    IMPORTANT INFORMATION
PhotoTex is not recommended for application over paints containing Teflon or “wash and wear” paints, always check with the paint manufacturer before purchasing this product. Teflon and “wash and wear” paints act as a repellent to the adhesive.
PhotoTex is not recommended for application on textured walls/ surfaces.
PhotoTex is not recommended on paint without a base layer of quality primer or paint that is flaking or in need of repair.
Do not apply this product to freshly painted walls. Allow approximately 4 weeks for the paint to completely cure.

We would always suggest trialling an A3 sample on your wall for a week or two if you are concerned in any way about the surface to which you are applying the decals or wallpaper to.

We would suggest you prime your wall with self adhesive prep coat prior to application if:

    • you are unsure if your paint contains Teflon or if you are unsure if your paint is a “wash and wear” paint*
    • you are unsure about the quality of the wall preparation or existing paint work*.

*Renters should especially note these points, particularly given that they may not have prepared and painted the walls themselves.

If your wall has been painted with a paint that contains Teflon or a “wash and wear” paint, this product can be applied prior to application to assist adhesion: Self-adhesive prep coat by Viponds Paint.  Apply two coats with 4mm nap roller. Allow drying time between coats as per directions provided by Viponds. http://www.viponds.com.au/digital-print-prep-products

If you do not feel confident installing the wallpaper, please utilise the services of a professional wallpaper installer.

We are unable to replace wallpaper that has been incorrectly installed.

Failure to follow our recommendations can lead to:

    • your wallpaper not sticking correctly or coming off your wall
    • possible damage to your walls when removing your wallpaper.

We cannot be held responsible for any damage to walls, due to the variation in paint quality and wall preparation.

Care: In the event you would like to clean your wallpaper, wipe over with a dry or damp (with water) cloth. Solvents will damage the print.
